6BN6-24

the inspiration for the module was to produce a module that processes audio through the 6bn6 gated beam discriminator tube. the pulser circuit found in the middle section of the wretch machine was an appropriate reference point to complete the module idea. an audio processor made with a 5965 double triode is the first signal processing stage that is then fed into the 6bn6.

the 5965 double triode was released in 1954 for use in magnetic drum data-processing machines. while the 5965 can be used for audio this was not the focus of the design of the 5965. the 5965 was designed for reliability and long life when used as a flip-flop circuit to store and recall 1 bit of information in a magnetic drum data-processing machine such as the ibm 650.

the basic signal flow of the module is audio goes into a non linear gain stage created with the 5965 that distorts and mangles the audio signal like a fuzzy waveshaper. the first processing stage oscillates and locks onto audio signals creating a unique second voice. to hear these oscillations the audio input level control needs to be low/counter clockwise to achieve loud saturated amplified distorted sounds without oscillations the input needs to be turned up/clockwise.

after that the audio signal is clipped and amplified even more by the 6bn6.

the first knob controls input level.
the second middle knob controls the oscillations and fuzz behavior of the 5965 pulser circuit.
the third knob controls the output level.

cv input influences movement of the pulser circuit.
it is recommended to insert the sequence that is feeding your oscillators into this cv input.
rhythmic pulses are also a good source to insert into the cv input.
this cv input can also be used as a second audio input.

specifications:
40mm deep
18hp
the module needs 1.8 amps of +12 on first power up for the tube heaters.
700 ma +12 on average after first power up.
50 ma -12.
